Wildebeest Calving Safaris — January to March, Southern Serengeti & Ndutu

Calving season is one of the most wildlife-rich phases of the migration. The herds concentrate around the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, where nutritious grass supports the birth of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves. February is particularly strong for newborn wildlife and predator activity, as lions, cheetahs and hyenas are drawn to the concentration of vulnerable young animals. We recommend spending several nights around Ndutu rather than rushing through multiple parks.

Serengeti Migration Safaris — April to June, Central & Western Serengeti

After calving, the herds gradually move north and west through the Serengeti. This period can offer a combination of migration viewing and excellent resident wildlife, with the western corridor and Grumeti ecosystem becoming relevant — and generally fewer visitors than peak season.

Mara River Crossing Safaris — July to October, Northern Serengeti

The northern Serengeti is the key destination for travellers hoping to see the famous Mara River crossings. Crossings can occur at different points and unpredictable times, so spending several nights in the northern Serengeti — around Kogatende and the Mara River area — gives you a far better opportunity than a brief stop.

You do not have to choose between the migration and Tanzania's classic wildlife attractions. Popular combinations include Tarangire → Ngorongoro → Serengeti, Tarangire → Ngorongoro → Ndutu → Central Serengeti → Northern Serengeti, and Ngorongoro → Central Serengeti → Western Serengeti → Northern Serengeti.

Where Is the Great Migration in Tanzania?

The answer depends on the month you travel. These are general migration patterns, not guaranteed dates — rainfall and pasture conditions influence exactly where the herds are at any particular time.

The right question is not simply "When is the Great Migration?" but "Which part of the migration do I want to experience?" For calving, choose January to March (especially February). For predator action, target Ndutu and the southern Serengeti in the same window. For the Grumeti movement, consider May and June. For Mara River crossings, plan for July to October in the northern Serengeti.

Can You Guarantee a Wildebeest River Crossing?

No. A responsible safari operator should not guarantee a specific Mara River crossing on a specific date. The herds can gather near the river, move away, return later, or cross at another location — weather, water levels, predators and herd behaviour all play a role.

The Great Migration is not only about watching wildebeest cross a river — it includes calving, predator-prey interactions, mating and large herd movements. The best safari is the one planned around what you want to experience, not simply the most popular migration photograph.
