Great Migration Safaris Tanzania
A fascinating animal kingdom, breathtaking landscapes and one of Africa's great wildlife spectacles — plan a Tanzania safari built around where the herds are moving and what you most want to see.
Request a QuoteAt Serengeti Trails Safaris, our Great Migration safaris are designed around the natural movement of the herds rather than a fixed calendar. We combine the Serengeti's key migration areas with destinations such as Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park to create practical Tanzania safari routes for different travel styles, budgets and trip lengths.
The Great Migration involves around 1.5 million wildebeest together with large numbers of zebra and gazelles moving through the wider Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water. It is a continuous annual cycle rather than a single event that happens on one particular date.
Best for: Wildebeest migration • Mara River crossings • Calving season • Wildlife photography • Big Five safaris • Private safaris • Family safaris • Luxury safari holidays
Great Migration Safari Experiences
Wildebeest Calving Safaris — January to March, Southern Serengeti & Ndutu
Calving season is one of the most wildlife-rich phases of the migration. The herds concentrate around the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, where nutritious grass supports the birth of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves. February is particularly strong for newborn wildlife and predator activity, as lions, cheetahs and hyenas are drawn to the concentration of vulnerable young animals. We recommend spending several nights around Ndutu rather than rushing through multiple parks.
Serengeti Migration Safaris — April to June, Central & Western Serengeti
After calving, the herds gradually move north and west through the Serengeti. This period can offer a combination of migration viewing and excellent resident wildlife, with the western corridor and Grumeti ecosystem becoming relevant — and generally fewer visitors than peak season.
Mara River Crossing Safaris — July to October, Northern Serengeti
The northern Serengeti is the key destination for travellers hoping to see the famous Mara River crossings. Crossings can occur at different points and unpredictable times, so spending several nights in the northern Serengeti — around Kogatende and the Mara River area — gives you a far better opportunity than a brief stop.
Migration & Big Five Safaris
You do not have to choose between the migration and Tanzania's classic wildlife attractions. Popular combinations include Tarangire → Ngorongoro → Serengeti, Tarangire → Ngorongoro → Ndutu → Central Serengeti → Northern Serengeti, and Ngorongoro → Central Serengeti → Western Serengeti → Northern Serengeti.

The answer depends on the month you travel. These are general migration patterns, not guaranteed dates — rainfall and pasture conditions influence exactly where the herds are at any particular time.
| Month | Main Migration Area | What You May Experience |
|---|---|---|
| January | Ndutu & Southern Serengeti | Herd concentration and beginning of calving |
| February | Ndutu & Southern Serengeti | Peak calving and predator activity |
| March | Southern Serengeti | Calves, predators and northward movement |
| April | Central Serengeti | Herd movement after calving |
| May | Central & Western Serengeti | Large herds and mating activity |
| June | Western & Central Serengeti | Northward movement and Grumeti area |
| July | Northern Serengeti | Early Mara River crossing season |
| August | Northern Serengeti | High-demand crossing period |
| September | Northern Serengeti | River crossings and northern migration |
| October | Northern Serengeti | Later crossing activity and southward movement |
| November | Central/Eastern Serengeti | Return movement toward the south |
| December | Southern Serengeti | Herds return toward calving areas |
The right question is not simply "When is the Great Migration?" but "Which part of the migration do I want to experience?" For calving, choose January to March (especially February). For predator action, target Ndutu and the southern Serengeti in the same window. For the Grumeti movement, consider May and June. For Mara River crossings, plan for July to October in the northern Serengeti.
How We Plan Your Great Migration Safari
A Great Migration safari should be planned around season, location and available time. Instead of promising a river crossing on a particular day, we look at your travel dates and build the safari around the region most appropriate for that period. Your itinerary can be adapted around:
- The expected migration location
- Calving or river-crossing season
- Number of safari days
- Private or shared safari
- Budget or luxury accommodation
- Wildlife photography requirements
- Family or honeymoon travel
- Number of nights in the Serengeti
- Ngorongoro and Tarangire combinations
- Zanzibar extensions
This matters because the migration does not follow an exact timetable. Rainfall can alter the movement of the herds, while individual crossings are naturally unpredictable — allowing enough time in the relevant migration region matters more than chasing a guaranteed date.
Great Migration Safari Experiences by Travel Style
| Style | What It Offers |
|---|---|
| Luxury | Premium lodges and tented camps close to key migration areas, with private guiding and more flexibility during game drives. |
| Private | Your own safari vehicle and guide, giving greater flexibility over game-drive schedules, photography stops and pace. |
| Budget | Focus your budget on the wildlife experience while using simpler camps or lodges and shared safari arrangements. |
| Family | Family-friendly routes combining the Serengeti with Ngorongoro and Tarangire while avoiding unnecessarily long transfers. |
| Photography | More time in the Serengeti, planned around migration concentrations, predator activity and river-crossing areas. |
| Honeymoon | Private safari experiences and carefully selected accommodation, often paired with a relaxing Zanzibar extension. |
What Will You See on a Great Migration Safari?
The wildebeest are the main attraction, but the migration supports an entire ecosystem. Depending on the season and location, your safari may include sightings of:
- Wildebeest, zebra, Thomson's and Grant's gazelle
- Lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas
- Elephants, buffalo and giraffes
- Hippos and crocodiles
- Ostriches, vultures and other birds of prey
The Serengeti is also renowned for its resident wildlife, so your safari is not dependent on seeing the herds every hour. TANAPA identifies the Great Migration, Big Five, high concentrations of carnivores and herbivores, rare species and birdlife among the Serengeti's major attractions.
Can You Guarantee a Wildebeest River Crossing?
No. A responsible safari operator should not guarantee a specific Mara River crossing on a specific date. The herds can gather near the river, move away, return later, or cross at another location — weather, water levels, predators and herd behaviour all play a role.
The Great Migration is not only about watching wildebeest cross a river — it includes calving, predator-prey interactions, mating and large herd movements. The best safari is the one planned around what you want to experience, not simply the most popular migration photograph.
